Akai MPC owners around the world rejoice. For absolutely nothing... you can download a very well sampled MPC expansion pack called Dark Mood. Yes, you read that right. It's 100% completely free.

Dark Mood is a new MPC expansion produced in a collaboration between thecyclekit.com and The Beat Community Facebook group.

Dark Mood features a sampled Yamaha Piaggero NP31 76-Key, a lightweight, compact, portable keyboard. The Piano was processed using UAD SSL 4000 G Bus Compressor and Ampex ATR-102 Mastering Tape Recorder. There are also two bundled Akai plugins assigned to the program as additional processing (large Reverb and Master compressor).

Free MPC Sounds & Samples For All Akai MPC Samplers. Free MPC sounds for your Akai MPC sampler – drums, instruments, expansions, kits & loops all in MPC format, compatible with all Akai MPC models. These samples are taken from some of the MPC samplepacks on my site dedicated to sounds and samples in MPC format, MPC-Samples.com. IMPC Pro Packs put the best parts of our hard hitting, pro production-ready MPC Expansion Packs onto your iOS device. On-the-go inspiration is at your fingertips with these expansions, custom crafted for iMPC Pro. Create your InMusic Profile. Akai Professional is part of an elite family of hardware and software companies known as inMusic Brands. The inMusic Profile is where you can register products, download software titles, and access exclusive content and offers - not just for Akai Professional, but for any brands within the inMusic network!

Each sample in Dark Mood lasts approximately 4 seconds and sampled between C0 thru C5 over 4 velocity layers. Only 4 seconds of every note was sampled because we wanted to keep the size of the piano below 250 megs. The kit is 249 megs unzipped and will work in both MPC as a standalone instrument and in controller mode.

Akai Professional has teamed up with one of his most prolific MPC users in AraabMusik to release its first artist Series Expansion Pack. The expansion includes over 1.3GB of samples and kits.

The Cycle Kit and Beat Community tell us the piano in Dark Mood works well for Trap music and vintage R&B Soul but it can be used of anything.

Price: No sign-up required – it’s totally FREE!

Installing our MPC Expansions into the MPC Live, MPC X, MPC One and Akai Force is quick and easy as we include a dedicated ‘standalone’ installer with all our expansions which you simply drag and drop to your MPC/Force disk.

This article covers installing our MPC Expansions into ‘standalone’ mode in the MPC Live/X/One and Akai Force. For installing expansions into the MPC Software, check out our ‘MPC Software Expansion Installation’ article.

What Are Expansions?

Expansions are samplepacks specifically formatted for installation into modern MPCs and the Akai Force. They contain samples, kits, instruments and sometimes sequences, patterns and even entire projects. They are commonly referred to as ‘MPC’ Expansions, but they also work in the Akai Force and the installation method is essentially identical.

Downloading & Extracting Your Expansion

After purchasing you can download the book from your File Bank. This will be a ‘zip archive’ so you will first need to extract the files using your computer’s default zip application – if you don’t have one, try the free, open source 7zip.

After extracting the files to a location on your computer, you’ll see something like this:

Most of our expansions are ‘multi-format’ and contain versions for different MPC models – in this tutorial we’ll be using the files inside the folder 'Standalone MPC-Akai Force Edition' – this contains the ‘standalone’ expansion installer.

Connecting Your MPC/Force Disk

It’s not currently possible to install third party expansions to the built-in 16GB internal drive, so instead we have to install expansions to an 'attached' disk. This can be an SD card, a USB drive connected to any of the USB ports or a SATA disk installed inside the MPC/Force.

To transfer files to this disk we’ll use a computer/laptop. One option is to temporarily remove the SD card or USB from your MPC/Force and connect it directly to a USB port or SD card slot on your computer. Remember, if your MPC/Force is currently switched on, first 'eject' the disk from your machine via BROWSER > Places:

Alternatively, you can connect via 'Controller Mode' (or 'Computer Mode' in the Force). This is also the only practical option if you are connecting to an internal SATA drive - please note that at the time of writing, this method is not supported by the MPC One.

First connect the ‘square’ USB port on your MPC/Force to a USB port on your computer using a standard USB cable. MPC users should then go to the MENU screen and click on the ‘MPC Chip’ icon at the top of the page:

This will bring up the ‘ENTER CONTROLLER MODE’ screen. Click on the CONTROLLER MODE button at the bottom of the page.

Akai Force users should go to the MENU screen and tap on the 'Laptop' icon in the top right of the screen (this time select 'COMPUTER MODE').

Whichever connection method you use, your MPC/Force disk will now appear as a ‘removable’ drive in your computer’s file manager (e.g. ‘Finder’ on a Mac, ‘Explorer’ on a PC). Click on the drive to open its file system:

With your disk now available as a removable drive on your computer, the next step is to copy the standalone expansion to it.

Akai

Locate your downloaded and extracted expansion and enter the folder 'Standalone MPC-Akai Force Edition'. Inside you'll find a folder named after the product itself – for example, if you purchased MPC Analog, you’ll see a folder called ‘MPC Analog’; this is the standalone expansion folder that we're going to copy to our disk:

To ensure that the kit is treated as a proper Expansion in your MPC/Force, make sure you first create a folder called ‘Expansions’ in the root location of your MPC/Force disk and copy the kit folder inside this ‘Expansions’ folder:

If the ‘Expansions’ folder already exists, simply add your new expansion inside it. In the above example you can see that there are already a number of expansions already stored inside the Expansions folder.

You can now ‘eject’ the disk from your computer and return your MPC Live/X/Force to ‘Standalone’ mode.

Accessing Your Expansions

Once you've transferred your expansions to your MPC/Force, you'll be able to access them via ‘MENU > BROWSER’:

Select the 'Expansions' tab on the left side of the BROWSER screen – you’ll see the ‘factory’ expansions appear first, but continue scrolling until you see your newly added expansions. Single tap an expansion image and the expansion files themselves will appear on the right hand side of the screen.

Use the BROWSER filters to filter the content by file type:

To view kits and instruments, select the ‘PROGRAMS’ filter (referred to as ‘Tracks’ in the Force). To view samples, choose the ‘Samples’ filter. Or just use the ‘All Files’ filter to view everything in the expansion.

You can also use the ‘Search’ option to filter the display based on a particular keyword or tag – this can be combined with the file-type filter. Below I’ve entered the search term ‘Lead’ combined with the ‘programs’ filter to display all the programs tagged with the phrase ‘lead’.

Frequently Asked Questions

Akai Mpc X Expansion Packs Free

Why can’t I install expansions to the internal factory disk?
Unfortunately Akai don’t allow direct access to the 16GB internal drive so it’s not possible to copy files to it. However any expansion stored on an attached disk is treated identically to the internal expansions, so the experience is the same, plus this means you can install many more gigabytes of expansions (limited only by the size of your attached disk).

Can I install an ‘XPN’ expansion into an MPC Live/X or an Akai Force?
No, XPN files are made specifically for installing expansions into the MPC Software (see this article here). All expansion pack purchases from MPC-Samples.com include a special drag & drop ‘standalone’ installer made specifically for the MPC Live/X/Force as well as a separate XPN installer for the MPC Software.

Do standalone expansions use ‘tags’ like the ones found in the MPC Software Media Browser?
No, tagging is not currently supported by Akai in the standalone MPC/Force browser. However we still add tags to our file names so you can use them with the ‘Search’ filter.

How do I upgrade an installed expansion after you release an updated version?
Simply download the new version from your File Bank and completely replace the version in the ‘Expansions’ folder on your MPC/Force disk.
